A 28-year-old man was killed in an accident during a leadership training programme conducted at the Uva-Kudaoya Commando Training Centre, police said.

The victim, who is a resident of Diyatalawa, was an employee of the Engineering Division of a private telecommunication company.

A group of employees of the company, including the victim, participated in the leadership programme at the Uva-Kudaoya Commando Training Centre on 06 July.

During the training, the group participated in several practical activities, including those involving ziplining.

The victim, being the last to participate in the ziplining activity, was unable to do so as he had fallen off into the lake below.

Army spokesman Brigadier Ravi Herath said that the Army trainers, within several minutes, had found the victim, who had fallen into a muddy part of the lake.

The victim was rushed to the Thanamalvila Hospital, but was pronounced dead on admission.

The Army has commenced an investigation into the death.

The police are conducting a separate investigation.
