Yahapalanaya Constitution?
During Maithree-Ranil government a committee was appointed by the parliament to draft a new constitution. It collected proposals from people – made verbal, when the Committee visited all areas of the country, as well as written. They presented their draft, and it was to be approved by the parliament and subsequently by a referendum. It never went through that process; reason might have been that the government itself did not agree with some of the proposals. Due to these reasons, that draft should not be considered or named ‘Yahapalanaya Constitution’ and say that the previous government was about to devastate the country by implementing it when the elections came overthrowing that government – with the promise of ‘Saubhaagyaya’. I am sure that the present drafting committee would study it as a guide when they make their proposals.
