MEP MP Yadamini Gunawardena says that Sri Lanka should stick to its commitment to a non-aligned foreign policy while fostering friendly relations with all nations.

Participating in the committee stage debate on the 2024 Budget under the expenditure heads, MP Gunawardena said that there was a pressing need for maintaining neutrality in global politics, condemning inhumane actions carried out under the guise of liberation for a specific community.

MP Gunawardena said that the government had continued its efforts in securing support amid a severe economic crisis, acknowledging assistance from various countries, globally.

The MP expressed gratitude towards regional neighbours such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, as well as countries like China, Japan, Korea, and entities like the EU, for their humanitarian support during tumultuous times.

Proposing the establishment of a Parliamentary Foreign Office, in collaboration with the Lakshman Kadirgamar Centre to enhance Sri Lanka’s diplomatic efforts, Gunawardena stressed the need for synergy beyond traditional Foreign Service circles.

The MP highlighted the potential contributions from academia, business chambers, and experts in international relations towards renegotiating treaties and strengthening global engagements.

MP Gunawardena said that there is underutilization of Ceylon Cinnamon as a trade commodity high in demand and urged the government to capitalize on this resource to access a broader market and boost revenues.

He also commended the President’s proactive steps in addressing climate challenges on the international stage, emphasizing Sri Lanka’s historical leadership role and its potential for global leadership in the future.
