Women in Tech launches Sri Lanka Chapter spearheading gender equality in tech
Women in Tech, a leading organization advocating inclusion, diversity, and equity in STEM education a teaching approach that combines science, technology, engineering and math – globally, initiated its Sri Lanka Chapter with a ‘Learners to Leaders – Women’s Journey in Tech’ panel discussion last week (Nov 21). The event held at Monsoon Colombo hosted over 50 experts, marking a significant step for Sri Lanka’s tech industry, aligning it with a global movement spanning 48 countries.
Chathini Uduwana leads as the Chapter Ambassador, supported by a dedicated team unveiling ambitious plans for 2024. Sponsors like Monsoon Colombo, Teardrop Hotels, and others endorsed this endeavor.
Globally, the tech gender gap persists, with only one woman for every five tech workers. In Sri Lanka, just 33% of females engage in ICT. The Women in Tech aims to reverse this, headquartered in Paris and committed to impactful change.
Ayumi Moore Aoki, CEO of Women in Tech Global, commended the Sri Lanka team. Panelists, including esteemed figures from academia and industry, discussed women’s roles in tech, addressing challenges from recruitment to workplace dynamics. They highlighted psychological concerns, work-life balance, and gender-inclusive leadership’s benefits.
The discussion focused on encouraging STEM education, exploring reasons for female undergraduates’ absence in tech careers, and advocating for a more inclusive and supportive industry for women at all career stages.
