With Sri Lanka battling Covid-19 another pageant coming up!

Yes, I just couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw an advertisement, on social media, calling for applications for a beauty pageant.

I was wondering who, in their right senses, could ever think of having such an event when the world is in turmoil, with everyone trying desperately to tackle this killer virus.

And, we in Sri Lanka, are feeling the terrible heat of the virus, as well, with infections on the rise, deaths increasing, and our people finding themselves in a total mess.

Probably the people, behind these beauty pageants, believe that they are doing the public a world of good!

Seriously, in what way do the masses, who are suffering now, benefit by these pageants?

The comments, on social media, would give you an idea, as to what people think of such foolhardy…

* Some people just don’t learn!. I think that if humans lay dying, on the streets, due to the pandemic, these pageants will still take place, for financial gains.

* May God save the beauties from these greedy pageant organisers.

* Calling such folks idiots is too lenient. They are actually mentally sick.

* Unfortunately, those in authority, and others who are greedy for money, fame and power, are pursuing, like Niro who fiddled while Rome burned. All the best for your article, and well done for the stand you are taking and expressing your views. We need more journalist like you who use various media platforms responsibly.

* Here, deaths are virtually at our doorsteps. Children have been deprived of schooling and these heartless ones want to have beauty pageants. I can’t imagine how any girl could even dream of competing, in such pageants, with Covid all around us.

* What are the health authorities doing in this regard! Haven’t they seen such advertisements on social media? Wonder who is fooling whom!

* Beauty pageants! Whose crazy idea is this? I know we have lots of idiots, and clowns, in our midst, but theses beauty pageants take the cake. I sincerely hope all the sensible girls will keep away from such events.

Covid guidelines are totally disregarded at these pageants, as was evident at a recently-held event – no face masks, no social distancing, etc.

Even on the big night, health guidelines were violated; while the lead up to the finals saw the contestants travel about, with no protection, whatsoever.

How come the authorities concerned, the health officials, and those who arrest people for violating health guidelines, fail to notice all these shortcomings?

At least, at this point in time, they should step in and ban all such competitions, until we have this killer virus under control.
