SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam yesterday demanded an apology from Industries Minister Wimal Weerawansa for being critical of the SLPP leadership.

Kariyawasam said that Minister Weerawansa had told media that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa should be the leader of the SLPP, which is currently led by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The SLPP General Secretary said that Weerawansa had to understand the SLPP was not his party and he had no right to make such recommendations.

The SLPP’s position was that Minister Wimal Weerawansa must withdraw his comment on the SLPP leadership, he said.

He said the SLPP was disappointed by the statement made by Wimal Weerawansa as the leader of a political party affiliated to the SLPP.

Minister Weerawansa said that he was not worried about the SLPP General Secretary being disappointed. “We are responsible for people and we worry only if the people are disappointed. The SLPP General Secretary being a national list MP cannot comprehend the consequences of people becoming disappointed with the conduct of government. After all, he got that national list seat by running errands to various leaders,” Minister Weerwansa said.
