When whales cause curfew violations
by Ifham Nizam
Hundreds of Blue Whales were seen close to the beach in the Panadura Coastal belt yesterday.
Hundreds of people rushed to the beach to see the whales despite the curfew in force.
Police and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard were quick to launch an operation to chase away these whales back to the sea while also instructing the crowd to move away from the beach.
The Wildlife Department said that for several years, Sri Lanka has been the world’s top location to spot Bluer Whales and Sperm Whales as they travel a long distance to warmer feeding grounds in the Bay of Bengal.
