What measures have been taken to bring back Arjun Mahendran? Justice Minister says he wants to ask AG
Only those who have passed GCE O/L will be appointed JPs
By Saman Indrajith
Justice Minister Ali Sabry told Parliament yesterday that only those who had passed the GCE O/L should be made Justices of the Peace.
Responding to a question raised by SLPP Kurunegala District MP Shantha Bandara, the Minister said that there had been instances where those who had not passed the GCE O/L had been made JPs, but the incumbent government had decided not to do do.
Minister Sabry said that he felt that it was not suitable to appoint JPs based solely on their social service records without educational qualifications.
MP Shantha Bandara said that there were a large number of social workers in rural areas who only possessed the GCE O/L qualification and whether such title of JP would be given to such social workers.
MP Bandara asked the Justice Minister whether measures had also been taken to extradite Arjun Mahendran implicated in the Central Bank Treasury Bond scam which caused the country huge losses,
Minister Sabry said that he would have to consult with the Attorney General’s Office regarding that matter and could not give an immediate response.
