Wellalage takes five wickets as Joes rattle Thomians for 75 runs

Sri Lanka Under 19 captain Dunith Wellalage picked up five wickets to restrict S. Thomas’ for 75 runs as St. Joseph’s continued their unbeaten run in the Under 19 Division I Tournament yesterday. St. Anthony’s, St. Sebastian’s, St. Peter’s and St. Aloysius’ joined St. Joseph’s as winners of the Division I matches played on Monday.

St. Joseph’s needed just 15 overs to record their third consecutive victory after the bowling attack led by Wellalage contained the home team to 75 runs at Mount Lavinia.

St. Anthony’s also registered their third consecutive win as their experienced campaigners Asitha Wanninayake and Chamindu Wickramasinghe scored half centuries for them to post a formidable total. Later a collective effort in the field could restrict St. Benedict’s to 173 runs. It was the Ben’s first defeat in three outings.

Meanwhile, St. Sebastian’s registered their first victory of the tournament when they reached a target of 113 runs for the loss of eight wickets. They handed St. Thomas’, Matara their fourth defeat of the tournament.

In a tough group, both St. Thomas’, Matara and S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia are yet to record a win.

In the Division I Tier ‘B’ tournament both St. Peter’s and St. Aloysius’ remained unbeaten as they registered victories against Dharmaraja and Thurstan respectively.
