Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) Chairman, Janaka Ratnayake yesterday said that the power crisis would worsen if the catchment areas did not receive rains soon.

“Power can only be generated for 10 days with the available water in the reservoirs”, Ratnayake said, adding that the Kerawalapitiya power plant had stopped operating as furnace oil and diesel were not available.

Currently nine million units of electricity are generated by hydro power plant.

Without these plants there will be serious issues in generating electricity, CEB engineers point out.

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has promised to provide adequate quantities of fuel for thermal power plants.
