Waste released into Kelani Ganga from 1,700 places

The latest research by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) reveals that waste is released to the Kelani Ganga from 1,700 sites.

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday said that the study had revealed that all those 1700 sites were located on either side of the Kelani Ganga from Avissawella to Peliyagoda.

The Kelani River, which is considered the most polluted of the 103 rivers in the country;

Most of the sites at issue are located in the Seethawaka Investment Zone.The study was conducted by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) on 103 rivers in the country and identified 11,000 rivers as polluting sites.Minister Amaraweera has assured that necessary action will be taken to clean all the other rivers and Rs. 2000 million has been allocated from Budget 2022 for this purpose.
