Vote for individuals and not parties
Most of us vote for a political party not for an individual. This paves the way for political nonentitiees like notorious thieves, criminals, thugs, hooligans, murderers to enter our parliament. For instance, Wimal Rathnayake, a very good politician in my view, was defeated in the last general election because he didn’t represent a popular political party but hooligans and criminals made their way to parliament because they represented a so called popular political party at that time. When we learn to vote for individuals not for political parties then only the political parties will make effort to field good candidates. In my district, there was a time, even a pariah dog fielded by Sri Lanka Muslim Congress stood a chance of being elected to our parliament. A similar situation prevailed when the SLPP was elected to power.
