Vajira fills UNP NL vacancy

UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena has been nominated to fill the vacant seat created following his party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe assuming office as President.

The Election Commission has issued the relevant gazette notification nominating Abeywardena for the vacant UNP National List.Acting in accordance under Section 64(5) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981, read with the provisions of the Constitution, the Election Commission noticed through the Gazette Extraordinary that Abeywardena has been nominated to fill the vacant seat.

The Election Commission gazette was in response to a letter by Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake to the Chairman of the Election Commission recently stating that a vacancy has arisen due to the swearing in of Ranil Wickremesinghe as the President.Abeywardena will be sworn in as a Member of Parliament at the upcoming Parliamentary session, parliament sources said.
