USD 3.1 bn foreign reserves: SJB not sure of Governor’s claim

Top Samagi Jana Balavegaya lawmaker Dr. Harsha de Silva yesterday (29) questioned the veracity of Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal’s declaration pertaining to the country’s foreign reserves climbing to USD 3.1 bn.

Asserting that the Governor made his much publicised claim in the wake of China making available Yuan 10 bn, lawmaker De Silva emphasised that those funds could be utilised subject to certain conditions. (See Financial Review for the Governor’s full statement). Lawmaker de Silva asked why the Governor couldn’t reveal the funding sources. The former State Minister said that the Governor was acting as if he was the Superman.

The former UNPer alleged that the government continued to deceive the public as the country struggled to obtain gas, milk food and other essential items against the backdrop of a dearth of USD.

MP de Silva said that the country was in a pathetic state today due to politicians hiding the truth over a long period of time (SF)
