In continuing consultations with political parties here, US Embassy officials yesterday (22) discussed what sources called matters of bilateral interests with SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem.
Sources said that discussions covered post-war reconciliation efforts, devolution of power, rule of law, Prevention of Terrorism Act and other issues.
Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz, Deputy Political Chief Marcus B Carpenter and Economic Section Chief Susan F. Walke represented the US embassy in talks.
Recently, a US embassy delegation led by Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz held discussions with TNA leader R. Sampanthan at the latter’s residence, where the focus was on the proposed new Constitution.
Both US and Indian missions are engaged in discussions with political parties represented in parliament and other groups to reach sort of common agenda. Among those invited for talks at India House were former LTTE Commander Karuna and ex-LTTE leader turned lawmaker Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pilleyan. Both Pilleyan and Karuna back the SLPP whereas the SLMC contested the last general election on the SJB ticket (SF).
