The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the United National Party (UNP) had not yet come to an agreement about contesting together in the coming elections, UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said.Recently SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said that the SLPP was mulling over forming an alliance with the UNP.
“However, there is no such formal agreement yet. We are ready to work with anyone to develop the country. That has been the position of the President from the beginning,” the UNP General Secretary said.
SLPP General Secretary Kariyawasam told the media recently that the SLPP was willing to coalesce with the UNP and would have discussions thereon with the latter.
“The SLPP is willing to support any political party with policies focused on the country’s future and the younger generation. Political parties can only survive by changing their policies to suit the needs of the country and its citizens,” Kariyawasam said, addressing the media on 12 December. Taking part in an interview with Derana TV, SLPP National Organiser Basil Rajapaska corroborated Kariyawasam’s announcement.
