UNP Chairman blames it all on govt arrogance

The third wave of Covid-19 had occurred because the government didn’t take the necessary steps to prevent it during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena said addressing an event at Ratgama early this week.

Due to the negligence of the government the people would face hitherto unseen hardships, Abeywardena said.

“Last year, the government locked the country down when a few cases were detected, but now thousands of cases are being found. Nothing is being done,” he charged.

Former MP Abeywardena said that health experts had warned the government to impose travel restrictions during the festive season. However, the arrogance of the government prevented it from listening to experts, he said.

“The government’s vaccination programme too has come to a standstill. Initially, the government promised to vaccinate everyone above 18. We need about 30 million jabs. But we have vaccinated fewer than a million people. Can we get the second doses of the vaccine?

No one knows.”
