University of Moratuwa win Virtual Inter University Taekwondo Poomsae Championships

Vice chancellor of the University of Kelaniya Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva was present as the chief guest.

University of Moratuwa edged out their Kelaniya and Colombo counterparts to win both the women’s and men’s titles of the first ever Virtual Inter University Taekwondo Poomsae Championships 2021 held on November 12 and 13.

In the four belt category event Moratuwa aggregated 10 points to beat Kelaniya (9) by a single point for the women’s title.

Points earned by H. N. de Silva (blue belt 7.53) and D. V. Jayaweera (blue belt 7.43) stood in good stead for Moratuwa to register victory in the women’s category.

In the men’s category they scored 11 points to beat Colombo. N. L. N. T. Lekamge (yellow belt 7.20), L. M. Chethiyawardhana (blue belt 7.43) and N. G. L. R. Lakshan (blue belt 7.07) scored the bulk of points for them.

The championship organized by the Sri Lanka University Sports Association was conducted by the University of Kelaniya with the event being monitored at the new gymnasium of Kelaniya University. The event was also closely monitored by Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation Technical Director Grand Master Ki Su Lee.

According to organizers all competitors had performed live virtually.

Chairman of Sports Advisory Board and Dean of the Science Faculty Senior Prof. S.R.D. Kalingamudali, the Registrar of University of Kelaniya, K.K.K. Dharmathilake, the President of SLUSA Dr. Chandrakantha Mahendran, the General Secretary of SLUSA Rohini Puvasingham, Director of Physical Education University of Kelaniya G.G.U. Saman Kumara and Senior Lecturer Dr. Namali Suraweera were also present at this occasion.
