Unions threaten to strike again

Trade unions will go on strike again if the government carries on with their unjust tax policy, Charudaththe Illangasinghe, media spokesman of the Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA), said yesterday.

Meanwhile, the University lecturers are on strike for the ninth consecutive day, which has brought the University system to a standstill.

“If the government has taxed our salaries like last time, we will restart the strike. We will not stop until there is a solution to our grievances,” he said.

Illangasinghe said that Professionals Trade Union Alliance (PTUA) is ready to conduct discussions with the government, however none of the previous discussions have borne any fruit, he said.
