UNDP official lectures lawmakers on revenue generation

On the invitation of the former Chairman of the Committee of Public Finance (COPF), Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, the Director of the Sustainable Finance Hub of the UNDP, Marcos Neto, on Tuesday (09) addressed members of Parliament on ways and means of improving revenue generation. The dialogue, ‘Revenue Generation as a Pathway to Sri Lanka’s Economic Recovery,’ held at the Parliament, attracted many members from the government, and the Opposition, as well.

The UNDP official, who is an expert in the field of international economics and finance, shared his experience and knowledge with the Members of Parliament.

The Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, several members of Parliament, representing the ruling party and the opposition, officials, including the Secretary General of Parliament, Dhammika Dasanayake, and the Assistant Secretary General, Tikiri. K. Jayathilaka, were also present.

Political sources said that the invitation, extended by the Parliament to the UNDP, was important as the House was inquiring into the circumstances Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s government removed a range of taxes. The move caused the loss of revenue, amounting to Rs 600 bn, annually.
