Unclaimed COVID-19 bodies cleared by AG to be cremated at state expense

Bodies of COVID-19 victims that have not been claimed by families can be cremated as per the Quarantine Regulations; Attorney General Dappula de Livera has informed Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena yesterday.

The Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said that Dr. Gunawardena had earlier sought advice from the Attorney General about unclaimed bodies of COVID-19 victims.

The Government Information Department earlier said the cremation of the bodies of those who succumbed to COVID-19 infection without relatives and guardians would be done at the expense of the Government.
