Umesh, Wanuja shine as Petes win

Spinners Niman Umesh and Wanuja Kumara shared ten wickets between them to help St. Peter’s fight back in the second innings and record a five wickets victory over Trinity in the Under 19 traditional cricket encounter at Asgiriya on Wednesday.

The home team had a first innings advantage of 39 runs when they commenced the second innings but the spinners managed to contain them to 109 runs leaving St. Peter’s batsmen a target of 149 runs to chase.

Chasing the target Vishen Halabage scored 31 runs, while Sanshay Gunathilake, Wanuja Kumara, Lahiru Dawatage and Niman Umesh chipped in with useful 20s to reach the target with five wickets to spare.

Umesh completed a match bag of ten wickets while Kumara had a match bag of seven wickets.

Meanwhile, at Katugastota a half century by Tharindu Harshana stood in good stead for Thurstan as they posted 148 for six wickets at stumps after being forced to follow on by St. Anthony’s. For the home team Asitha Wanninayake bagged eight wickets.
