David Cameron, the former British prime minister who has recently become the country’s foreign minister, has told the BBC that there must be “long-term safety, security and stability” for Palestinians in order for Israel to be secure.

“You’ve got to think about what will happen in Gaza after this conflict has finished and how is that going to be stabilised? How is that going to be secure? How’s it going to be governed?” Cameron said.

He also said that civilian casualties in Gaza as a result of Israel’s bombardment were too high and added that Israel had to crack down on violence by settlers in the occupied West Bank.

“People are actually targeting and on occasion killing Palestinian civilians. It’s completely unacceptable, and those people responsible for that, it’s not good enough just to arrest them. They need to be arrested, prosecuted and imprisoned,” Cameron said. “These are crimes.”

Cameron has been on a trip to Israel and the occupied West Bank, where he has met both Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
