The UK has banned overseas students from bringing their families, affecting thousands of foreign nationals, including Sri Lankans. The British media quoted British Home Secretary James Cleverly as having said the move was meant to cut migration significantly.

The Minister called it an end to the “unreasonable practice” of bringing family members to the UK. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recently announced the majority of foreign students couldn’t bring families. The ban, introduced in September 2022, affected all foreign students, except postgrad research and scholarship holders.
