True understanding of protesters
In response to the article about the Legal aspects of the Aragalaya break into the President’s House, I would like to say that it may not have been LEGAL, but it was totally understandable. For the first time since Independence, the people showed a unity of spirit and at the start there was no intention of being either violent or disrespectful. Obviously, many were youngsters caught up in the thrill of actually seeing the House they would probably never see again.
Furthermore, harking back to Socrates and the Greek philosophers may serve us politically today, but I would like to remind the writer that Greeks had a City State and small populations. It was easy to run such a government. BUT let us remember that this Greek home of democracy kept slaves, and women had no place in men’s affairs.
What applied to the City States can never be applied except to outline ethical and moral considerations. This may be the cause of the weakness of Democracies all over the world. Where is the happy balance between City State populations and the huge populations of today? Switzerland and Denmark are the only success stories I can think of at the moment.
