Trends for 2023 Creative, adventurous and fun
Another year has come and gone, which means it’s time to start planning our vision boards for the year ahead. But first, let’s talk about the 2023 style trends that experts predict will take over our closets. We know to start shopping for airy styles—think anything with lace, tulle, or ruffles—but what else?
Among the experts, there was a general theme for the coming year: embracing your own style. The trends are all fun to participate in, sure, but only if you can make them your own. “I think people are getting more comfortable with pushing the boundaries,” fashion creator Kendall Rayburn tells . “Fashion is only getting more creative in terms of self-expression.”
Oversized Everything
Gen Z has already banished the skinny jean from their closets, and Rayburn thinks they’re onto something. With oversized blazers and extra-large shirts trending on the TikTok Rayburn predicts the oversized trend will only grow in strength next year, with even the bottom of our pants expanding

Sheer Fabrics
Rayburn and fashion stylist Audree Kate López concur: Sheer fabrics are en vogue. “We saw a lot of this pop up in 2022, and it will continue in 2023 with the lace trend, rhinestones, and sheer panels in clothing,” she tells with this comes plenty of layering, both on top and underneath. It’s time to ask yourself, “Am I ready for a peekaboo bra moment?”
Cutouts
Love it or hate it, Barros says that the cutout trend is here to stay. Whether it’s a keyhole in the front of a shirt or a dramatic waist situation, you’ll be seeing even more of this controversial trend in 2023.
Minidresses and Skirts
The death of the maxidress has finally arrived, at least according to Rayburn. She’s predicting shorter hems taking over the fashion world next year. “Minidresses, tailored skirts, and skirts with cutouts are all styles I think we’ll see more of,” she says. Yes, this means micro miniskirts are coming back with a vengeance.
A Y2K Revival
The embrace of low-rise jeans and cargo pants in 2022 is (unfortunately) here to stay. Brixton women’s design director Eunjoo Kim says we’ll see a sharp decrease in high-rise jeans and an influx of low-rise pants with baggier, slouchier silhouettes.
Military-Inspired Looks
“Thanks to Bella Hadid, we saw searches for cargo pants increase,” says creative director and stylist Taylor Okata. “We also viewed them on spring 2023 runways, including at Coperni and Diesel, and will probably see more and more of them on the street. Kim agrees, anticipating that styles will evolve past the utility and workwear trends into more military details and colors in surplus basics.
Ballerinas
While we all might not be able to do pirouettes or chassés, Miu Miu’s impact will bring ballet-core to the forefront in 2023, according to Okata. Marina Larroudé, cofounder and CCO of Larroudé, believes that ballet flats and Mary Janes will be next year’s It shoes. “We sold out of our best-selling Blair Ballet Flat after only two weeks back in August, and our reorder of this style has only been up on our site for a week now and is almost sold out,” she tells “It’s safe to say this trend will be a hit for a while.”
The Revenge Heel
López says the kitten heel is out and the revenge (a.k.a. platform) heel is in. We’ve already seen this trend taking off with celebs like Charli D’Amelio and Selena Gomez rocking Larroude’s platforms. Larroudé herself agrees, saying that the platforms are “the new shoe to have.” She suggests taking the revenge heel trend further by going for one with a sultry lace-up detail.
López also believes punk and goth dressing à la Addams will maintain their hold on the fashion world in 2023. “Look for lace, leather, chunky boots, silver jewelry, and sheer clothing,” she says for anyone hoping to take part in the trend. Even if the alt-punk look isn’t your typical style, López says you can easily incorporate “tougher elements” into your wardrobe with ease by mixing them with romantic lace, florals, and even disco shimmer details.
’90s Revival
Sure, the early aughts are having a moment, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy relics of fashion’s past. Both López and Larroudé predict ’90s silhouettes will make a comeback. Think column dresses and skirts, Matrix-inspired leather details, and pumps with vintage-inspired details.
Disco Diva
Think shimmery rhinestones, tons of glitter, sparkly sequins, and slick metallics all making a sort of ’80s glam resurgence. “I’m personally a big fan of maximalist dressing and the resurgence of grandma glam,” López says. “I love the current trends of feathers, strong shoulder silhouettes, fringe, and platform heels, so I am excited to see it really continue to grow in 2023.”

The 32nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the UK-based Institute of Hospitality’s Sri Lanka Chapter was held recently at the Ramada Hotel Colombo,.The event provided an evening of camaraderie , reflection of the past and present achievements,setting new benchmarks for the future
The AGM had the presence of two distinguished guests, the Chief Guest Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, and the Guest of Honour British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Andrew Patrick. Their inspiring speeches were lauded by all hoteliers who were present at the occasion
A special thanks was extended to Robert Richardson, CEO of the Institute of Hospitality UK, along with his team, sponsors, committee members, and all attendees for making the event memorable.
Dr. Harsha Jayasingh, Past President of the Institute of Hospitality (UK) Sri Lanka Chapter, emphasised the Institute’s longstanding history and the strength of its Sri Lankan branch. “The Institute of Hospitality (IH) UK has a history of 86 years, and we are proud to be the Sri Lanka Branch. IH Sri Lanka is much stronger now with many members from all areas of the hospitality industry,” he stated.
Dr. Jayasingh highlighted the significant role of tourism in Sri Lanka’s economy,. He said tourism it is the third-largest source of revenue for the country. “Tourism accounts for about 13.3% of total foreign exchange earnings and employs 450,000 people directly and indirectly. The hospitality industry in this island of pearl holds tremendous potential for economic growth, job creations, and cultural exchange,” he added.
He also pointed out more women should be attracted to the industry and advocated for the use of technology in hospitality sector to attract the younger generation.
The newly appointed Chairman Ramesh Dassanayake spoke about the challenges faced by the industry, including the reluctance of youth to join the sector. . Dassanayake expressed concerns over the migration of staff between hotels and the overall ‘brain drain’ in the sector. ” We must maintain high standards in the hotel We must try to attract tourists to Sri Lanka, we must have with many facilities Hence, hotel schools and other professional institutions involved in skills development mustincrease their intakes,” he pointed out.
Chief Guest Sajith Premadasa emphasised the importance of eco tourism and said “We need to have an environmental policy related to tourism in place,” . .

Visit of Sri Gurudev to Sri Lanka
Humanitarian, spiritual leader and Global Ambassador of Peace Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (Sri Gurudev) was in Sri Lanka on a three day tour on the invitation of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Dinesh Gunewardene. Gurudev who inspired a wave of volunteerism and service to moot one of the largest volunteer-based organisations in the world – The Art of Living – visited the various projects under the aegis of the foundation and launched twelve vocational and technical centers around the island. He was accompanied by thousands of followers from Sri Lanka and around the world.
Gurudev who visited Sri Lanka for the sixth time also had a first day cover launched in honour of his visit. He is a strong proponent of spreading happiness, using the unique Sudarshan Kriya, yoga, meditation and practical wisdom to unite people, empower individuals and transform communities. His programmes provide techniques and tools to live a deeper, more joyous life, while his non-profit organisations recognize the human identity beyond the boundaries of gender, race, nationality and religion.
The Art of Living which has more than 30,000 teachers and over one million volunteers across 180 countries has touched in excess of five hundred million people around the world. CNN called it “Life Changing” and The Washington Post headlined it, “Fresh air to millions”.
In Trincomalee, Gurudev met with war victims and had a heartwarming engagement with the children from the children’s homes run by the Foundation. He also visited the Koneswara Temple in Trincomalee and graced the Kumbhabhishekam at Seetha ecogPnize the human identity beyond the boundaries of gender, race, nationality and religion.
