Treasury smothers medical specialists’ cadre expansion
By Rathindra Kuruwita
Sri Lanka continued to have a limited number of specialist doctors as the Management Service Committee of the Finance Ministry had not approved an increase in the cadre of specialists, Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando told The Island yesterday.
“Sri Lankan medical standards compare favourably with those in developed countries, but it has a relatively low number of specialists. As the Management Service Committee has not approved the recommendation to expand services at the institutions under the Ministry and at the provincial level, we are not able to obtain the services of doctors that come out of postgraduate institutions.”
