TNA leader says govt. popularity at rock bottom

The current administration had very little popular support, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader, R. Sampanthan said yesterday.

The TNA leader said that the Gotabaya Rajapaksa administration had enjoyed considerable support among the Sinhala Buddhists, who, too, were now fed with the government.

Speaking to the media, Sampanthan said that within two years the government had become extremely unpopular. He added that the government was extremely stubborn and didn’t listen to anyone.

“Any government can face protests and union action. But large, continuous protests against a government are not a positive sign. Even religious leaders are out on the streets with the people. This is indicative of the lack of trust people have in the government,” he said.

The TNA leader said that in recent weeks the government had tried to use the police to intimidate protestors. It could only make matters worse, he said
