Three arrested with pulse oximeters imported through backdoor

Acting on information received from the public, the police have recovered 3,400 pulse oximeters on Thursday (10), police headquarters spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said.

DIG Rohana, who is also the head of the Police Legal Division said that pulse oximeters used to measure a person’s blood oxygen level are in good demand due to the rampaging Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the senior police officer, the stock of pulse oximeters had been brought into the country through illegal means and three suspects were taken in along with the contraband in separate raids. DIG Rohana said that the National Medical Regulatory Authority has also initiated an inquiry into the detection, the first such recovery made by the police.

DIG Rohana said that Central Anti-Vice Strike Force based at Walana made the detection. Of the recovered stock of pulse oximeters, one suspect had 1,000 whereas the other two had 1,200 devices each. The police have also taken into custody two cars and one van along with suspects, residents of Wellawatte and Modera (SF)
