Threat to wonderful coconut oil
The hot topic, over-shadowing the Easter Sunday attack, the Bond Case and PC elections, is the import of coconut oil, with a high concentration of aflatoxin. Investigations have commenced questioning the importer and the Customs officers concerned. Did the foreign company, which supplied it, dupe our importers? If so, this matter should be investigated, at an international level, as the company at issue may be supplying other countries with contaminated out.
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is near, and every household will be preparing the traditional sweets – konda kavun, athiraha, mung kavun, etc., and coconut oil will be in high demand, Advertisements appear in both print and electronic media for the sale of these delicacies. Surely, the producers cannot go in search of pure coconut oil; they must be using whatever is available in the market.
I read an advertisement where a bottle of pure coconut oil was priced at Rs.1200. If that is the price of pure coconut oil, can a poor man afford to pay that amount?
What options could the health authorities, or the government, give the public to overcome this difficulty?
