Thomians, Thurstan take first innings honours

A collective bowling effort helped S. Thomas’ take first innings honours against Mahinda as they bounced back to restrict the latter to 197 runs in the Under 19 traditional cricket encounter at the SSC ground on Wednesday.

Abheeth Paranavidana, Akash Fernando, Yatindra Siriwardene, Nathan Caldera, Kavindu Dias and Dineth Goonewardene shared the first six wickets and restricted Mahinda to 197 runs despite the team from Galle batting for 87 overs. For Mahinda, Dulsith Dharshana excelled with a half century.

At Negombo, Thurstan posted 213 runs to take first innings honours against Maris Stella as Navindu Fernando scored a century to almost single handedly guide the visitors. His 111 runs came in 149 balls and included 15 fours and a six.

The home team did well in their second essay as Ramith Bandara and Yohan Aloka scored half centuries for Maris Stella.

Sethru Fernando was the pick of the bowlers for Thurstan. He collected a match bag of eight wickets including a six wicket haul in the first innings.
