About 31 students of the Eastern University had tested positive for COVID-19 during the last three days, Trincomalee Regional Health Services Director, Dr. V. Prem Anand told the media yesterday.

Dr. Anand said a student from Embilipitiya had tested positive initially. Rapid antigen tests had been conducted on his close associates and 30 of them had tested positive, Dr. Anand said. Those who tested positive were accommodate in a building away from other university students. 140 associates of those who tested positive too have been quarantined in the university premises.

College of Medical Laboratory Science (CMLS) President, Ravi Kumudesh told The Island yesterday that given the inefficiency of the government in controlling COVID, a number of clusters were emerging from across the country.

Despite the emergence of clusters random tests were no longer conducted and unless the Health Ministry aggressively tests people, nothing could prevent regional clusters forming, Kumudesh said.
