Thileepan commemorative events prohibited in Colombo
The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court and the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Courts yesterday (19) prohibited events planned in Colombo to commemorate LTTE member Thileepan.
The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court issued the order prohibiting commemorations in the Kollupitiya, Colombo Fort and Slave Island areas, while the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court issued the order prohibiting the same within the Maradana area.
The relevant order was issued against all persons expected to participate in the celebrations including the Christian Solidarity Movement (CSM) and Rev. Fr. Marimuttu Satyavel, following a request made by the Fort Police.
Rasaiah Parthipan aka ‘Thileepan’ died while on a hunger strike at Nallur, in Sept. 1987, during the deployment of the Indian Army in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, in terms of the Indo-Lanka accord.
Police sought court intervention here following an attack on a vehicle carrying a portrait of Thileepan at Uppuveli, Trincomalee on Sunday (17) by a group of persons.
