Thehan to meet Luca in the final

Royal College player Thehan Wijemanne is set to fight for the men’s singles title of the Clay Court Nationals against Luca Knese after the two teenagers beat their experienced semi-final opponents at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association clay courts on Friday.

When these players last met at the SSC Open Ranking tournament, it was the German who triumphed. Wijemanne was ousted 6-2, 6-4 in the quarter-finals and Luca went on to win the singles title beating Vibuda Wijebandara in the final.

The student from NICE International School, Negombo will be seeking his third consecutive men’s singles title, after having won the Colombo Championships and the SSC Open Ranking tournament titles this year.

Knese who is currently ranked third in the men’s singles beat Sankha Atukorale 6-0, 6-2 in the semi-final yesterday. It was the second time that Atukorale had to bow down at the semi-final in consecutive meets.

Wijemanne beat Akila Vimukthi 6-2, 6-2 in his semi-final.

The final will be played today.

In the women’s singles final Savini Jayasuriya will encounter Janali Manamperi.
