Teacher arrested for caning 10-year-old schoolgirl

A teacher accused of caning and injuring a Grade five student of Lunama Maha Vidyalaya, Ambalanthota was arrested yesterday.The teacher was to be produced before the Angunukolapelessa Magistrate.

The girl was admitted to the Tangalle Base Hospital.The parents of the victim said they had been compelled to lodge a complaint with the police as the Principal of the school had not taken action when they took up the issue with him.

Police said the teacher had caned the girl as she could not read her Sinhala textbook properly.
