Tamil MPs protest opposite Presidential Secretariat
President’s Media Division says cheap protest by TNA with eye on UNHRC
The MPs of Tamil political parties yesterday protested near the Presidential Secretariat against alleged land grabs by Mahaweli Authority and Archeological Department.
A group of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs had turned up at the Presidential Secretariat to hand over a letter to the President without making a prior appointment, the President’s Media Division said in a media statement.
The President had already left for a previously scheduled programme when the TNA MPs arrived. Subsequently, the TNA MPs staged a protest outside the Presidential Secretariat.
“The TNA MPs had been given time to meet the Prime Minister, but, they had protested outside the Presidential Secretariat, the President’s Office said. It is clear that their arrival without prior notice and the protest, which took place when the President was not in his office was a deliberate attempt to cast the government in an unfavourable light in view of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva,” the President’s Media Division said.
