Talks underway with UAE, France for extradition of 30 SL criminals – Alles
Public Security Minister Tiran Alles disclosed yesterday that the government was having talks with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and France to have 30 wanted Sri Lankan criminals living in those countries extradited.
Minister Alles said 29 criminals operated from Dubai, the UAE’s financial centre. The Minister said so at the inauguration of an exhibition and carnival at Kirindiwela on the invitation of Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga.
The SLPP National List MP said that in line with the ongoing countrywide security operation, code-named ‘Yukthiya,’ efforts were being made to persuade those countries to hand over Sri Lankan fugitives to face trial here.
Minister Alles said that their efforts had been impeded due to laws of the relevant countries where the wanted men were residing. According to him, in addition to those who had taken refuge in the UAE and France, there were some Sri Lankan criminals in other countries, as well
Minister Alles said that he would make every effort to eradicate the underworld within the next six months though 100 percent success couldn’t be achieved. (SF)
