Supreme Court to resume hearing arguments next Monday

The Supreme Court will resume hearing arguments supporting the Fundamental Rights Violation petitions challenging the Yugadanavi deal next Monday (14).

The petitions have complained that the agreements between the government of Sri Lanka and the New Fortress Energy of New York, USA is in violation of the right to equality of the citizens of Sri Lanka and the generations to come. Hence the Court should cancel the agreement. Among the petitioners are the Venerable Elle Gunawansa thera, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith of the Catholic Church, General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya Ranjith Madduma Bandara and the office bearers of the JVP.

Several government ministers too are backing the challenge of the controversial deal.

Among the respondents are the Prime Minister, the Cabinet of Ministers and the Attorney General.

The bench comprises Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Buwaneka Aluwihare, Justice Priyantha Jayawardena, Justice Vijith K. Malalgoda and Justice L.T.B. Dehideniya.
