Anews item headelined ‘GL prepares to take tough stand against ragging’ went down well with all those opposed to this sadistic practice still carried out in our universities, despite causing serious harm to victims, some of whom even died. With ragging worsening yearly, there has emerged an anti-ragging movement in each and every faculty of the universities where ragging exists. In the case of the University of Peradeniya, an anti-ragging movement came into being in 1996. The problem with our people is that any agitation fizzels out before the desired objectives are acheived.

How easily we forgot the fate of 23-year-old Dilhan Wijesinghe of the University of Moratuwa, who committed suicide in 2019 due to one of the worst ragging incidents. He was previously studying in the University of Jaffna, where he was subjected to some terrible physical ragging and then got a transfer to the University of Moratuwa. Unfortunately, the ragging at the University of Moratuwa was severe and he could no longer tolerate it. It is also on record, that in 2015 a 23-year-old student, Amali Chathurika of the Sabragamuwa University, committed suicide due to ragging. In 2014 the body of D.K.Nishantha was found hanging from a tree within the premises of the University of Peradeniya. According to police report he had not attended university since the time of an alleged sex abuse case. In 2006, Prof. Chandima Wijebandara, the Vice Chancellor of Sri Jayewardenepura, resigned from his post after failing in his campaign to eradicate ragging.

We are confident that our professor at last will put an end to this inhuman practice in our universities, and save the helpless new entries from the heartless bullies. We are waiting sir!
