Sugandhi creates new meet record in 100 metres hurdles
Hurdler Lakshika Sugandhi smashed the meet record of the women’s 100 metres hurdles as top national athletes continued to shine on day three of the Sri Lanka Army Athletics Championships at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Wednesday.
The South Asian Games medalists Lakshika Sugandhi, Himasha Eshan and Roshan Dhammika were the winners in their respective events as they emerged the top performers of the day.
Sugandhi clocked 13.84 seconds to clinch the gold medal in the hurdles event as others failed to reach sub 14 seconds.
While sprinter Himasha Eshan stopped the clock at 10.29 seconds to win the men’s 100 metres, men’s 110 metres hurdles national record holder Roshan Dhammika clinched the men’s high jump gold with a feat of 2.14 metres on Wednesday.
In the grueling 10,000 metres, the former Ratnayake Central distance runner Chamini Herath was the winner as she returned a time of 37:23.50 seconds to win.
National steeplechase champion Udaya Bandara Herath was 13 seconds slower than his personal best but was fast enough to win the men’s title (9:13.24 secs) finishing nearly four seconds ahead of former champion Pushpakumara.
Dilhani Lekamge was the winner in the women’s javelin as she cleared 55.57 metres.
M.D. Saparamadu won the men’s discus throw gold with a feat of 44.69 metres.
