Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith yesterday urged the government to halt a mega tourism project to be carried out in the Muthurajawela Wetlands.

The marsh was being filled up to build a golf course, hotels and other buildings, the Cardinal said, addressing the media.

“If this project is not stopped, people of Gampaha will face floods.”

Successive governments had contributed to the destruction of Muthurajawela,Cardinal said, adding that the Catholic Church had persistently opposed the ‘development projects’ that harmed the environment.

“This is not a private property. It belongs to the state.”
