St. Joseph Vaz’s complete group matches unbeaten

Dominant bowling performances were a permanent feature of the St. Joseph Vaz’s College team during the curtailed Under 17 Division I cricket tournament and that pattern continued yesterday as they completed the Group stage unbeaten.

Sri Sumangala College, Kandy became the fourth team of their Group (K) to be dismissed for a low score yesterday as St. Joseph Vaz’s registered their fifth win. Left-arm spinner Dasun Perera was the star of their bowling attack as he returned impressive figures (4.2-2-6-5) to rattle Sri Sumangala for 54 runs.

Dharmaraja College, Kandy (99), Vidyartha College, Kandy(73) and St. Mary’s College, Kegalle (35) suffered heavy defeats at the hands of St. Joseph Vaz’s as they were dismissed for low scores.

St. Sylvester’s (124) were the only team in Group ‘K’ to top 100 runs against the lads from Wennappuwa but the team captained by Menusha Perera overhauled the total to record a five wicket victory.

At Darley Road, left-arm spinner Yenula Dewthusa picked up five wickets and Hiran Jayasundara scored an unbeaten half century to lead St. Joseph’s to seven wickets victory over St. Benedict’s.

While Hasith Sandeepa scored unbeaten 86 runs to help De Mazenod record six wickets victory over President’s, Thurstan fought back to beat Lumbini by 32 runs after posting 129 runs.

Meanwhile, Royal too completed their matches unbeaten with their three wicket win over Prince of Wales at Reid Avenue. Bulan Weeratunga and skipper Sineth Jayawardana produced all-round performances in the Royal victory.
