Police Spokesman, SSP Nihal Thalduwa yesterday urged parents, who are finding it difficult to raise their children to visit the nearest police station. He also urged parents not to hurt their children if the financial situation has made it impossible to feed or cloth them.

“If you can’t raise your children, visit the nearest police station and lodge a complaint with the Women and Children’ division there,” he said. The Police Spokesman said that in recent days, some parents had tried to kill their children and then commit suicide, claiming that they could not feed them.

On 15 June, a woman threw her five-year-old child into the Kelani River from a bridge between Hendala and Mattakkuliya. Those nearby grabbed hold of her when she attempted to hurl herself into the river.Police say that the woman’s husband had passed away and she was suffering from chronic hip problems that prevented her from working. The current economic crisis had made it impossible for her to feed the child, she has told the police.
