Sri Lankans in Melbourne doing it our way!
Surprise! Surprise! The state of Victoria, in Australia, is in lockdown – from 12 midnight, May 27th, till June 4th.
Most of my friends, living in Melbourne, blame the irresponsible behaviour of some of the people for the lockdown. And, I agree.
I was surprised to see on social media, Sri Lankans (as usual), having a good time, at parties, birthday celebrations (held at outside venues), and various other functions, in Melbourne, unconcerned about the existence of the killer virus.
In fact, there was a concert scheduled for the 4th of June, in Melbourne, where the organisers finally decided to have it cancelled, and ticket holders refunded.
It’s hard to fathom how people can think of musical events, etc., when the world is in turmoil, due to the pandemic.
In the meanwhile, back at home, the entertainment situation remains the same – completely dead.
Sohan Weerasinghe was working on a project, so that he and his band of musicians could keep themselves occupied during the pandemic, since public events are now tabooed.
He venture – two CDs – got off the ground, and recording was in progress when the unexpected happened…and with the current lockdown, everything is now on hold.
Obviously, the veteran artiste/entertainer is thoroughly disappointed.
‘With the current situation, there is absolutely nothing that we can do now. It’s imperative that we all stay at home, and stay safe.”
Singer Manilal Perera, although very disappointed that he is unable to visit his family, in Italy, due to overseas travel restrictions, has put aside his music and is now dabbling with his culinary skills, while staying at home.
“When there is no total lockdown, I venture out, purchase my requirements, and cook my meals. The rest of the time I spend relaxing, watching TV, and also giving a few online music lessons to some of my students.”
Right now, there seems very little hope for an active music scene…definitely not in the very near future.
However, let’s all fill our minds with POSITIVE THOUGHTS.
