Sri Lanka girls’ team remain unbeaten
Sri Lanka girls’ team comprising of Dinara de Silva, Arushi Thomas, Gehansa Methnadi and Oneli Samarawickrama beat their Nepali counterparts 3-0 to conclude the campaign of the fourteen and Under ITF World Junior Tennis Asia/Oceania pre-qualifying round unbeaten at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts.
In the two singles matches, Arushi Thomas (beat Adya Poudyal 6-3, 6-1) and Dinara de Silva (beat Sqnira Thapa 6-2, 6-3) beat their Nepali counterparts in straight sets.
In the doubles match, De Silva joined Oneli Samarawickrama to beat Yenny Khadka and Adya Poudya 6-3, 6-2. The Sri Lanka team were captained by Dineshkanthan Thangaraja.
In the nine-team girls’ competition, Sri Lanka secured the top spot as they remained unbeaten. They beat Mongolia (3-0) and Singapore (3-0) in the group stage before beating Iran (2-1) and Nepal to emerge as the top team. Iran and Nepal were placed second and third respectively. The top three teams qualified for the next stage to be held in Thailand in March.
The other teams in the fray in the girls’ competition were Iraq, Jordan, Oman and Pakistan.
In the 13-team boys’ competition Sri Lanka were placed fourth and did not qualify for the next stage.
