Sri Lanka clinch Central Asian Men’s Volleyball Challenge Cup

The Sri Lankan National Men’s volleyball team receives the winners’ trophy after beating Uzbekistan in the final at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium on Sunday. Pictured from left are A. S. Sri Lanka national volleyball team beat Uzbekistan 3-0 in the final to win the Central Asian Men’s Volleyball Challenge Cup at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Sunday.

While exceptional 25-14, 25-18, and 25-22 victory secured the title for the hosts, Afghanistan settled for the second runner-up position of the tournament by defeating Saudi Arabia.. Incidentally it was Uzbekistan who inflicted hosts’ only defeat during the group stage. During the group stage, they beat Sri Lanka in a five set thriller with scores reading (25-20, 16-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-11)

Sri Lanka’s Mahela Indeewara Bandara was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament sponsored by Dialog.

During the initial stage Sri Lanka registered victories against Bangladesh 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23), Afghanistan 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-22, 25-17), Nepal 3-0 (25-24, 25-18, 25-16) and Saudi Arabia 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 26-24).
