Speeding bus overturns injuring 36 passengers, including 24 children

Thirty six people, including 24 schoolchildren, were injured when a state-owned passenger transport bus overturned in Siyambalanduwa, Monaragala yesterday morning.The bus had been speeding and the driver lost control of it, the police said.Those who were injured are being treated at several hospitals in the area.

The driver of the bus has been taken into custody.Residents of the area told journalists that the driver had been drunk.There were 2,557 deaths resulting from 2,200 fatal traffic accidents in Sri Lanka in 2023, according to police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa. (RK)
