Specialist doc remanded for attempted murder of wife

The Bambalapitiya Police on Tuesday (02) informed Colombo Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasena that a medical doctor in custody over an attempt to kill his wife by giving her an insulin overdose had divulged that he wanted to kill his wife and then commit suicide but later changed his mind.
Producing the suspect doctor before the Magistrate, police said he had admitted that he tried to kill her. The suspect was remanded till 04 May.
The doctor, working at the Trincomalee General Hospital, was arrested on Sunday by the Bambalapitiya police. Police say, according to evidence, he had not made any attempt to commit suicide.
The 24-year-old doctor’s wife is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Kalubowila General Hospital and police say that they have not been able to record a statement from her so far. The suspect is 33 years old.
The doctor and his wife are residents of Kaththankudi.
Police say that the doctor took his wife to the Kalubowila hospital along with her younger brother, and admitted her, on the morning of 25 April.
She was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit, as her condition was serious.
