Soldier arrested with stolen brass statue from Kovil

Vavuniya police recently arrested a soldier for stealing a brass idol of Nataraja from the Ganadevi Kovil in Vavuniya.

The suspect is a 21-year-old soldier attached to the Akkarayankulam Army Camp.

The suspect was caught by a group of drivers at a vehicle park in the area and handed over to the Vavuniya Headquarters police while he was taking the statue for sale.

The priest of the temple has told the police that the idol is worth around Rs. 55,000, police said, adding that further investigations were underway.
