Skipper Bavuma ruled out
South African captain Temba Bavuma’s tour of Sri Lanka has come to an abrupt end after he was forced to leave home with a fractured thumb.
During the first ODI on Thursday, Bavuma was batting alongside Aiden Markram chasing Sri Lanka’s total of 300, when he tried to avoid a throw by Wanindu Hasaranga. The erratic throw, however, accidentally struck on his thumb. He continued to bat but two overs later retired as he was in discomfort.
Bavuma did not resume his innings as the Proteas lost a close game. He was taken to hospital and the scans revealed a fracture.
A timeline as to when he will make a comeback to the side is not certain. Cricket South Africa said that Keshav Maharaj will take up the captaincy for the remaining two ODIs. The selectors will meet to decide who will lead the side in the T20s.
Meanwhile Quinton de Kock and David Miller, who are part of the T20 squad arrived in Colombo yesterday.
Sri Lanka will be looking to seal the series today having put up a superb performance against a team ranked number five. They have not won a series against a top ranked team in seven years.
